Prescription for Death – Houston Cocktail

Once again “pill mills” are the hot topic! Yesterday morning on ABC News, Chris Cuomo interviewed the Scarborough family who lost their son to a prescription drug overdose…the prescription cocktail written for him at one of Houston’s MANY pain clinics.

Houston has become a hot spot for these clinics, where customers can often be seen lining up around the block. Many waiting on one particular mixture of prescription drugs named after the city, the “Houston Cocktail.”

The “Houston Cocktail” consists of three drugs, which officials say give users a “heroin high” when taken together. These include hydrocodone (a narcotic known by such brand names as Vicodin); alprazolam (an anti-anxiety drug known as Xanax); and carisoprodol (a muscle relaxant known as Soma).

It’s no surprise that Harris County has experienced a significant rise in this form of drug abuse. Last year, according to the Medical Examiner’s office of the 467 toxicity related deaths in Harris County over 78% of the cases contained traces of Rx medications. Rx medications were present in more deaths than cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine combined.

  1. I think people should take these drugs only if prescribed by doctors. They might have a negative effects on their health if these drugs are abused.
